Death toll in Assam violence reaches 75 - Home Minister orders military operation against NDFB

    A day after NDFB militants unleashed havoc on innocent Adivasis in Assam, Union Home Minister Mr.Rajnath Singh has declared an all-out war against NDFB. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by the Home Minister and attended by top officials of Ministries of Home, Defence and Paramilitary Forces, sources said. "This was an act of terror and we will deal with it accordingly... whatever action is required, we will take," Rajnath Singh told reporters after the meeting. The Home Ministry has also asked the Army to mobilize troops from its Sonitpur unit for the operation. Already 5,000 personnel of paramilitary forces have been rushed to Assam to assist the state government to deal with the situation.

     Meanwhile, PM Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of lives in the militant attacks in Assam. He has sanctioned ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 to seriously injured persons from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund. Rs. 86 lakh is being released to the Assam state government from PMNRF. As of now, the death toll in Wednesday's carnage has crossed 75 while more than 200 people have been reported missing in Kokrajhar and Sonitpur districts of Assam.
